The AI Breakdown First Five - Wednesday November 8, 2023

The AI Breakdown is back from traveling and excited to dig into some absolutely game-changing updates from Elon, Altman and more.

Today on the First Five:

  • 5. $500m Enterprise AI Fund

  • 4. Baidu Buys from Huawei Over Nvidia

  • 3. YouTube Testing AI Features

  • 2. Meta New Rules Around AI in Political Ads

  • 1. Samsung Putting AI on Phones

5. $500m Enterprise AI Fund

Big funding shows no signs of slowing down as we head into the holiday season. General Euro AI company Aleph Alpha raised a half-billion dollar series B, while IBM announced the same amount in an Enterprise AI investment fund. It looks like Stability AI may announce more funding soon as well.

4. Baidu Buys from Huawei Over Nvidia

US export pressure on the AI chip space seems to be having an effect. According to Reuters sources, Baidu placed a big order with Huawei for their 910B Ascend AI chips — meant to rival Nvidia’s H100.

3. YouTube Testing AI Features

AI integration Autumn continues as YouTube has begun testing a set of new AI features. One of them groups comments into topics to give creators a better sense of the themes in the discussion. The other is a chatbot that can summarize videos and answer viewer questions.

2. Meta New Rules Around AI in Political Ads

One of the big questions right now is how AI is going to impact the elections. Meta announced a new set of generative AI tools for advertisers, but also banned campaigns from using them. In general, Meta will also be requiring political advertisers to disclose any use of AI in their ads.

1. Samsung Putting AI on Phones

One of the next frontiers for the AI wars is artificial intelligence running locally on phones. Apple seems to be moving that direction and now reports suggest that Samsung’s next Galaxy phone — due early next year — will have an integrated AI model called Gauss.
