5. AI Coming to Dungeons & Dragons

The D&D renaissance continues and now it’s moving into the world of artificial intelligence. As part of an announcement of a partnership with software company Xplored, D&D maker Hasbro has said that the partnership will allow them to “deliver innovative gameplay to our players and fans, limitless digital expansions to physical games, seamless onboarding, and powerful AI-driven game mechanics.” 👀

4. An Anthropic Hackathon Winning Projects

Every weekend in the Bay Area seems to hold another AI-related hackathon, and this weekend they were hacking around Anthropic. Some of the projects included a real-time fact checker for live broadcasts like presidential debates; a doctor agent; a tool to help immigrants identify and complete government paperwork; and a research tool for molecular scientists.

3. Bills to Expand AI Research and Further Cut Off China

A bipartisan group in Congress and the Senate have introduced the CREATE AI Act to create the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource to expand access to advanced AI research outside of a small handful of big tech co’s. Plus an open bipartisan letter is pushing the Biden Administration for further chip restrictions on China.

2. AI Resurrects Extinct Neanderthal Antibiotics

In research inspired by “Jurassic Park” (like, actually) a group of scientists used AI to explore publicly available protein sequences of human ancestors including Neanderthals and Denisovans to look for peptides with potential antimicrobial properties. Could ancient proteins improve modern medicine?

1. Google Releases Med-PaLM 2 Multimodal Research Paper

Speaking of AI for medical use, Google has been pushing ever forward with their Med-PaLM models and last week released a research paper about a new multimodal generalist AI for health. As researchers point out “medicine is inherently multimodal.”
