Plus Nvidia officially hits $1T as internet people complain about a new AI trend
The AI Breakdown First Five - Wednesday May 31, 2023
A note: the First Five experiment continues this week!
5. China Has AI Anxitement
Xinhua is reporting about a meeting yesterday led by Chinese premier Xi Jinping where he called for “a dedicated efforts to safeguard political security and improve the security governance of internet data and artificial intelligence.” In April, China released draft regulation on AI that encourages AI, but a version of it that fits within the CCP system.
Only 35% of Americans believe that AI’s benefits outweigh its risks. China, by contrast, ranks as the most optimistic country in the world when it comes to AI, with nearly four out of five Chinese nationals professing faith in its benefits over its risks.

4. You Can’t Even Trust A Zoom Interview Anymore
A new AI tool that provides live, real-time transcription and can suggest answers to questions in real time has everyone chattering about the potential for hacking your next job interview. Could this be another way in which AI contributes to put pressure on people to return to offices?
RIP online job interviews.
This AI tool enables real-time transcriptions for your microphone input AND speaker output.
It then generates a response for the user to answer questions based on the live conversation:

3. The Internet Finds A New Dumb Thing to Be Mad About
AI can provoke some severe reactions. There are questions of ethics, copyright and fair use; questions of jobs disruption; even existential questions. So it makes sense then that people on the internet are really mad about…..people using Photoshop’s new generative fill feature to expand paintings and album covers? I dunno man, just seems kinda harmless and fun.
1. Ever wonder what the rest of the Mona Lisa looks like?
Got @Adobe Firefly to help fill out the background for me with the power of AI
Here's what the backgrounds of the most famous paintings in the world look like with AI:

2. HP Boss Says AI Will Change PCs
HP CEO Enrique Lores is convinced that the rise of AI will fundamentally change how we think about personal computers. For its part, HP is reimagining computers that have deeper AI integration for advanced functionality. Lores said “I have never seen an opportunity like this, to really drive innovation and drive new types of customer needs that we think are going to be fundamental.” Then again, he said it on Jim Cramer so the opposite is likely to happen.
1. “AI” Is An Insult Now?
The Atlantic has dedicated a major feature to exploring a trend where calling someone “AI” is coming to mean they’re a knock-off, subpar version of a thing — i.e. NBA player Jordan Poole as “AI Steph Curry.” It’s sort of an extension of calling people NPCs for not having their own thoughts (although ironically Nvidia just announced an AI transformation of NPCs…). To the extent this becomes widespread, it’s an interesting commentary on the anxiety and fear AI is provoking.
PS. Nvidia is officially in the $1T market cap club.
Jim: “I like adding NVIDIA to your portfolio if you haven’t, it just crossed $1T market cap, it’s terrific, BUY”
