5. AI Discovers a Supernova

Over the past 6 years, human astronomers have spent an estimated 2,200 hours manually hunting supernovas by visually inspecting and classifying supernova candidates. A team at Northwestern (Go Cats!) has developed a Bright Transient Survey Bot that can do this painstaking work entirely on its own, freeing up scientists for other areas of research.

4. Jon Steward Leaving Apple Over AI/China Disagreement

It was a big get for Apple to get a news show with Jon Stewart. And yet very abruptly the partnership has come to an end. Reportedly, Apple asked Stewart to get in line with it’s perspectives on AI and China, to which Stewart said “no thanks bye!”

3. IBM’s “Mind-Blowing” New AI Chip

IBM has debuted research around their new “Northpole” chip in the journal Science. The main innovation of the chip is that it reduces the need to access external memory, meaning it can perform tasks faster and with much less energy.

2. $86B Valuation for OpenAI

Remember that report that OpenAI was doing a tender offer of employee stock between an $80b and $90b valuation? It appears the final number is $86b, and we’re starting to get some information about who is participating, like Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital.

1. GenerativeAI Coming to Next iPhone?

All year, some of the big questions in generative AI have been: what is Apple going to do in the space, and when are they going to do it? We know they’ve been spending millions every day training AI, and now MacRumors says they might be rolling out generative AI features as soon as iOS 18.
