5. Microsoft Calls for AI Agency
Apparently big tech competition in AI has also now come to who can most loudly call for regulation. Microsoft President Brad Smith outlined a 5-part plan in a speech in Washington D.C. on Thursday, joining OpenAI in calls for a new dedicated regulator. IBM argues that instead of a new agency, every existing agency should become an “AI agency.”
Microsoft Calls for a New US Agency and Licensing for AI (MSFT) // RIP “Freedom to Innovate”. The corporate circle of life: becoming what you battled against.

4. OpenAI $100k Governance Grant Program
One of the regulatory concerns with AI is bias, and OpenAI has earmarked 10 $100,000 grants for people to create frameworks for answering a host of related questions around what they call “Democratic Process.” Google DeepMind has also teamed up with OpenAI and others to propose an early warning system for AI risk.
The most fundamental 'democratic process' would be to run a large-scale global survey of humans on whether AI should be developed at all. Or not.
If you're not willing to ask that, you're just imposing AI on our species without our consent.

3. AI Helps Discover New Anti-Superbug Antibiotic
The WHO classifies Acinetobacter baumannii as among a group of bacteria that pose the “greatest threat” to humanity, because of its ability to develop drug resistance. Researchers recently used AI to screen thousands (6,680 to be precise) of antibacterial molecules, which led to 240 being lab tested, ultimately revealing 9 potential antibiotics for the bug.
AI has helped discover a new superbug-killing antibiotic.
Anyone calling to slow-down progress in AI should remember there are massive costs to inaction.

2. TikTok Joins the Chatbot Frenzy
TikTok, which is basically already AI powered through its video recommendation algorithm, is adding a chatbot called “Tako” to the mix. Imagine watching a video of a chef and then being able to ask Tako for the recipe. TikTok hasn’t confirmed many details, saying only that they’re testing it exclusively in the Philippines so far.
1. Google’s “Search Generative Experience” is Here
At I/O one of Google’s biggest announcements was the biggest overhaul of search in 20 years. They’re now allowing users to sign up for the waitlist for the new AI enabled experience, which they say can help with things like understanding topics faster.
Interesting screenshots of Google's SGE in this TechCrunch article.
