Welcome to The AI Breakdown, the most interesting & important news and conversations in AI.

First, the News:

The Most Interesting Story

Google, Google, Google. The last couple months have been leak after leak all showing Google getting more and more frantic about its non-leadership position in AI.

  • Samsung told Google they were considering replacing Google with Microsoft Bing as the default on their devices

  • A note from a Google researcher leaked discussing how open source AI efforts were moving much faster than they were

  • An AI founding father and 10+ year Googler Geoffrey Hinton left to begin warning about the dangers of AI, in part because he thought business needs were taking over caution

Around this we’ve also had some product rumors. Project Magi, for example, is apparently the code-name for a reimagined search experience designed for the AI era.

Well, this week is Google’s massive annual developer conference I/O. And according to yet another leaked internal document, it’s all about AI.

The headliner is a new general-use LLM called PaLM 2. Internally it has been “Unified Language Model” and it includes more than 100 languages. This follows PaLM’s first version which was announced in April 2022.

Bard is also getting some significant updates. The company has been working on a multi-modal version of the search experience called “Multi-Bard.” As many have speculated part of the emphasis seems to be on better AI-assisted coding. There are also a number of AI integrations with the existing Google suite.

The question is whether it’s enough to actually reclaim momentum.
