5. Another Ex-Engineer AI Safety Convert

Much of the rise in AI safety discourse this year was sparked by Geoffrey Hinton leaving Google. In July, another senior AI engineer Jacopo Pantaleoni left the role at Nvidia that he had held since 2001. His argument is that the biggest threat to the world is the concentration of AI power in the hands of megacorps like Google and Microsoft.

4. Conor Leahy Speaks to the House of Lords

Continuing the trend of AI safety voices finding more powerful audiences, Conor Leahy spoke at the UK House of Lords yesterday, proposing a set of measures to mitigate AI risk that includes personal and business liability, caps on computing power and a global AI kill switch.

3. A New Bipartisan “Light Touch” AI Bill in the Senate

Senate Minority Whip John Thune is set to introduce what he calls “light-touch” AI legislation with the backing of Democrat Amy Klobuchar. The bill involves companies assessing their riskiest models and a self-certification system. Thune says its meant to directly contrast what he believes will be more heavy-handed legislation coming from Chuck Schumer.

2. YouTube’s Big AI Announcements

AI Product Fall continues with YouTube announcing a slate of AI products at its "Made on YouTube” event this week. They include tools for generating AI image and video backgrounds for Shorts; AI-powered content suggestions that are personalized to the creator; an AI-powered music recommendation system and finally an AI overdubbing tool to automatically translate content to other languages.
