5. Senator Sends Warning Letter About AI in Hospitals
Google began providing hospitals access to their Med-PaLM 2 model earlier this year, and Senator Mark Warner is not happy about it. In a letter sent directly to CEO Sundar Pichai, he called the deployment premature and financially motivated, and asked for answers to 12 pointed questions about the product.
Amid concerning reports that Google is testing an AI chatbot in real medical settings, I’m calling for more transparency and accountability. We must put patient wellbeing over risky rollouts.

4. AI Detects Asteroid
A new AI called HelioLinc3D has identified a potentially hazardous 600-ft asteroid. While the object 2022 SF289 doesn’t currently pose a threat, the new program shows promise as a more effective way to identify dangerous near-earth objects. Given how frequently we hear about the scary implications of AI, it’s a nice reminder of the positives as well.
We found our first potentially hazardous asteroid, 2022 SF289, using the HelioLinC3D code that will power @VRubinObs's LSST survey!! Written by @uwdirac's Ari Heinze, the new code can identify asteroids with half the observations as needed before. washington.edu/news/2023/07/3… . 🧵 👇

3. Google and Music Labels In Talks Around AI Music
In one of the more obvious about faces in recent history, it appears the record labels are now trying to figure out how to make money from AI fakes of their artists. The FT reports that Warner and Universal are in discussions with Google about developing tools for people to create licensed AI fakes.
Google and Universal Music are in talks to license artists’ melodies and voices for songs generated by artificial intelligence as the music business tries to monetise one of its biggest threats.

2. Stability AI Launches Dedicated Coding LLM
Stability AI continues its relentless pace of product releases with StableCode, a new LLM focused specifically on coding. StableCode will support a set of languages including Python, JavaScript and offers a 16,000 token context window.
Happy to announce the first in the stableCode series of models led by @reshinth_ & @nco@ncooper576k context length & over 500b tokens, this is the small fast 3b parameter version, very interesting variants on the way…
Programming will be transformed so there will be 1b coders https://
