5. 7% of Americans Are Using ChatGPT Daily
A new Reuters/Oxford study suggests that AI adoption is still nascent. In the United States, the study found 7% using ChatGPT daily. Whether 24 million people using a new tool every day 19 months after it was released is impressive or underwhelming seems to be largely in the eye of the beholder.
You are both early (47% of Americans say they have never even heard of ChatGPT) and also surprisingly on time (I would not have expected that 7% of Americans are already using ChatGPT daily, and almost 1 in 5 Americans use an LLM at least weekly)

4. Jan Leike Moves to Anthropic
After very publicly and loudly resigning from OpenAI (which proceeded the disbanding of their Superalignment team), Jan Leike has shared his new plans: moving over to rival Anthropic.
I'm excited to join @AnthropicAI to continue the superalignment mission!
My new team will work on scalable oversight, weak-to-strong generalization, and automated alignment research.
If you're interested in joining, my dms are open.

3. ChatGPT’s Board Controversy Redux
Former OpenAI board member Helen Toner was recently on a podcast where she added more details about why she and others on the board came to distrust Sam Altman. The story itself is fairly gossip-column psychodrama, but the reaction to it shows the seriousness with which people take the question of future leadership in AI.

2. OpenAI Training Next Model
OpenAI has widely been assumed to be training GPT-5 for a year or more now. As per a new post about a their just-formed Safety committee, they’re now officially acknowledging that they’re training the model. Unless GPT-5 is done and what they’re referring to is GPT-6?

1. OpenAI No Longer Pursuing Superintelligence
With all the controversy swirling around Toner’s interview, a different piece of OpenAI news flew under the radar. A spokesperson has said that the company is trying to achieve AGI but not superintelligence where AI is significantly smarter than humans.
