OpenAI is developing an internal alternative to GitHub, spurred by a rise in outages at Microsoft's code repository platform — 37 in February alone, up from an average of 17 per month last year. Sources say it's early stage, intended for internal use first — but then again, so was Claude Code. This isn't the only project to rebuild GitHub for the agentic era; former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke's new startup is built on the same thesis. As Ameya put it, the interesting play isn't just hosting code — it's owning the layer that understands how code connects across services and teams.

Meta Forms New Applied AI Engineering Org
Meta has formed a new applied AI engineering organization to fill gaps between hardware, tooling, and model teams. The org has an unusually flat structure — two teams of 50 people each under a single manager. One team focuses on interfaces and internal tooling, the other on data collection and refinement. It reflects Zuckerberg's new management philosophy: projects that used to require big teams can now be accomplished by a single, very talented person.

US Considers Per-Customer Cap on NVIDIA Chip Sales to China
US trade officials are considering a 75,000-chip cap per customer on NVIDIA H200 and AMD MI325 sales to China, plus a million-unit total cap that hadn't been previously reported. That's less than half what Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance each wanted. Within these limits, each company can only build ~100 megawatt data centers — far short of the multi-gigawatt clusters planned in the West. The big question is whether this is a meaningful constraint or window dressing, especially with chips on the agenda when Trump meets Xi in a few weeks and the Iran war complicating everything.

The GPT-5.3 Instant announcement — "more accurate, less cringe" — goes right to the heart of this. For consumers, does model performance matter more than vibes? And have we already crossed a threshold where good enough is good enough, making vibes all you're left with competing on?
OpenAI's personality problems have been a longstanding meme on Reddit. The model will no longer tell you to "stop, take a breath" or assume your emotional state. As one Reddit user put it, no one has ever calmed down in all the history of telling someone to calm down. Related questions: how much will consumers care about work vs. personal use cases like companionship? How integral will image and video generation be — a major gap for Anthropic? And what's the average number of models people are willing to use? If 95% of users only want one, multimodal capabilities become table stakes.

What percentage of users can labs actually get to upgrade to paid? Which features drive conversion outside of work — is it running out of access to a companionship model, wanting faster responses, or sharing AI-generated memes in WhatsApp groups? And the big one: how much will ads in the free tier matter? Anthropic is betting ads will push people away from ChatGPT. The base case here is more skeptical — the conversion ceiling probably isn't high enough for these businesses to grow the way they want, which will lead them all back to ads eventually.
Agents: Not Just for Power Users
The evidence suggests we're underestimating how many "normies" are going to throw themselves into the agentic era. Millions of non-developers are diving into Claude Code and Open Claw right now — 5,500 people are in Claw Camp hacking their way through agent building, most of them not developers by trade. The expansion potential for agents beyond work use cases could reshape the competitive dynamics significantly.
Competition, Lock-In & Switching Costs
How much will integration into existing systems matter — will people default to whatever AI is on their phone, or make distinct consumer choices? Will people be fine using one tool at home and a different one at work? Right now switching costs feel extremely low, with one major caveat: memory. If you've built up 20 projects with their own context and files in one platform, a lightweight memory import prompt doesn't cut it. Don't be surprised if we see regulation around memory and data portability — it is, after all, your data.
Ethics, Regulation & the QuitGPT Question
QuitGPT claims 2.5 million boycott participants, and the uninstall numbers suggest it's not all bluster. But 2.5 million is less than a single percentage point of ChatGPT's 900 million users. The real question: how durable is this? If GPT-5.4 drops Thursday (OpenAI teased "5.4 sooner than you think" with a capital T) and it's genuinely great, how many of those 2.5 million come back? There's also the partisan dimension — the QuitGPT movement likely owes as much to who Anthropic is fighting with as to the principle of a private company pushing back on the government.
