One of the most controversial uses of AI is for video surveillance. It is one of the highest risk uses of AI as identified in the EU AI Act, but in advance of the 2024 Olympics, France is leaning in.
"France is betting big on AI-assisted security for the Olympics. Hundreds of smart cameras in Paris & beyond will monitor the crowds. A new law...has expanded legal applications of algorithmic video surveillance" ahead of #Paris2024, writes @Anthony_Faiola

2. GPT-4.5 Speculation Increases Over the Weekend
Last week we discussed how OpenAI leaker accounts like Flowers from the Future and Jimmy Apples were heavily suggesting that GPT-4.5 was imminent. Over the weekend, a significant perceived performance boost just ratcheted that discussion up even further.
ChatGPT-4 suddenly got very good again for some reason, after being unreliable & a little "dull" for weeks
(Though this might be my favorite interaction: I asked it to create files for me, it insisted it could not, I told it to try, it did, and then look at the top code comment)

1. TikTok Creator Secretly Using OpenAI To Train Competitor
Apparently TikTok parent ByteDance is very worried about being behind in the AI arms race. The Verge is reporting that the company’s “Project Seed” to develop their own LLM is heavily relying on OpenAI’s API — despite that being a violation of OpenAI’s terms of service.
“OpenAI suspends ByteDance’s account after it used GPT to train its own AI model”
Interesting.
